Lecture 9 Assignment

lecture homework assigned April 15
Reading Assignment: In The Making: Choosing a Mission: pg.281-321 (Victoria Vesna, Wenda Gu, Tony Oursler, and Mariko Mori)
Writing Assignment:
The Dia Art Foundation's second artists' project for the world wide web, begun in 1995, was created by the Russian emigrant artist team Vitaly Komar and Alex Melamid. The Most Wanted paintings, as well as the Least Wanted paintings, reflect the artists' interpretation of a professional market research survey about aesthetic preferences and taste in painting. Intending to discover what a true "people's art" would look like, the artists, with the support of the Nation Institute, hired Marttila & Kiley, Inc. to conduct the first poll. In 1994, they began the process which resulted in America's Most Wanted and America's Least Wanted paintings, which were exhibited in New York at the Alternative Museum under the title "People's Choice."
Copy and paste into blog post and answer the questions in Komar and Melamid's survey about painting preferences. After you have finished, answer the following questions in thoughtful, paragraphs in your blog post:
1. Do you think that your answers are similar or different from most Americans? In what ways are they similar, and different? I feel they are different because I look at things more openly then most people and try to understand things deeper than most. I mean don't get me wrong but my since of Art just is different than the standard.

 2. Which questions do you think would be the most helpful if one was using market research to design new paintings for sale? What questions would you ask differently, or leave out entirely? I feel the questions on color shades and types of content help while the general information questions hindered the survey

3. Would this work? Why or why not? I feel the survey would not work because as an Artist my art is meant to connect my life to whatever I am creating.

SRL Lecture Assignment

Survival Research Laboratories is not the art we do of course I could be counted as the art of science for the study of motion to the motionless and can help further the work an animator does. They do not meet the ideals of an contemporary artist. I think what they do is great to see if you like robot wars. I mean no disrespect to them in anyway but what they do is more of a science than contemporary art. I feel like they would be of great help to an animator though.

There work opens new worlds for animation. It allows for ways to make things of fantasy to be real. You can make an animatronic dragon. You can make its breath fire and walk. Its because of people like them. They help us further what we wish to do with our works.

SRL is like the the Disney and universal studios creatures without the outer foam skin. They just work with the gears and actually cause damage. Disney and Universal doesn't intend to use their projects to do so. The tweak the wiring to be more stationary than mobile. SRL uses mobile and remote control animetronics.

They are just young guys playing around with the toys they make. The don't promote violence they just critique it. They just don't know how bad things could go for them if they do not watch what they do. They just have fun with what they do because its what they love just like art is what we love. They just create and don't think. Some people just don't like it and It is not a reason for them to criticize what they do so harshly.

SRL's audience are the people and children who like what they do. The stage their work in Amsterdam because that is a place like Las Vegas. Its a city of sin and is know for the bad. It is a city full of shows, sex, and other things of that sort. They know people there will like to see the show and draw in more of a crowd than any other place.
